How to Think Of a Good YouTube Name For Your Channel?

How to Think Of a Good YouTube Name For Your Channel?

Let's talk about how to think of the perfect name for your YouTube channel. There's a lot of people that are now starting their own YouTube channels and they want some information on how to think of the perfect brand name. So I thought there would be no better time to share all my information with you guys.
I'm going to be sharing a total of different tips that you can use to think of the perfect name.

Don't have to follow rules

But the first tip in my opinion is the most important and that is that you don't have to follow any of these rules because at the end of the day your channel is your identity and you have to choose a name that you like the most. And it doesn't have to follow all of these rules. More importantly, because people don't subscribe just because of your channel name, it actually comes down to your content.

And if you look at a channel like KSIOlajidebtHD V2 that name goes against all the rules I'm going to be sharing with you. But the channel itself still has a ton of subscribers. And that's because at the end of the day it comes down to your content. Now the first tactical tip I have for you is that you need to determine what your brand is going to be.

Before you think of your name you have to decide what the purpose of your channel is going to be and how you want people to perceive you. For example, you can have 2 different YouTube channels that make the exact same type of gaming videos but one of them wants to be known as a personality and the other one wants to be known as an organization or a media group.

And they're both going to have very different names because they want to perceive a different kind of brand. Now once you think of the brand that you want you can name your use YouTube channel in a bunch of different ways.

The 3 ways to categorize different kinds of names:-

  1. Your real name.
  2. Using names that associate your channel with a certain type of content.
  3. My favorite choosing something completely random.

Now of course these are 3 very broad and general buckets but this will help you brainstorm a bunch of different potential names that you can use. If you're someone that wants to be known for personality it makes a lot of sense to use your full name. And there's a lot of channels that do you have full names as their brand name.

But if you're someone that wants to be known for their content, there's a lot of different ways you can name your channel.

For example, if you want to do gaming videos you could be known as the gaming garage or the gaming guru, or the gaming Genie. There's so many different ways you can actually on different words to make a brand name that people will know about and they'll be able to understand the content you make simply by looking at your name.

And if this is the route you want to take there's so many different ways you can actually name your channel. You can pick any core words such as gaming or cooking or games. And then you can add any nouns verbs or adjectives before the word after the word or both. So you have a lot of different possibilities. And if you know what kind of content you're going to make this is probably the best option for you.

Go with something completely random

Now it doesn't just have to be random letters put together. It can also be a word that you think is really cool translated into a foreign language so it sounds random but to you it has meaning.

For me, the name Chiko is actually completely random. I used a name generator and then saw the word chee ko and I was like Okay so sounds cool but Chiko sounds even cooler. And the reason I chose this channel name is because I wasn't completely sure what kind of content I wanted to make and I didn't want to restrict my channel because of its name.

So for example, if I had named it Software with Shaunie and then I made a Vlog one day people are going to be like Okay I just watched the Vlog. But why is your channel called? Software is Shani. So that's why I thought Chiko is the perfect name for what I wanted to do.

Use name generator

Now if you're having trouble thinking of a name I would recommend 2 tools. The first one is the Shopify name Generator and this one's really good. If you know what kind of content you want to make and you want to think of a different name it'll brainstorm a ton of ideas for you. And if you want to think of a completely random name which falls into the third bucket I would use the website to spinXO which is what I used. And it just puts together a bunch of random letters and you can find really cool random names that you can tag to your channel.

Now once you've brainstormed a few names the next step is to actually search for that name on YouTube and filtered for the channel to see if anyone else has the same channel name as you.

And so for example, if your name is John and you want to name your YouTube channel John if you search and you can see that there's a lot of really big YouTubers that show up some of them whose name names aren't even John so ranking for John would be very very hard.

So for example you can actually search for what you want. And if there's a lot of results that come up with high view counts and high subscribers I would not recommend it now say for example John wanted to make videos on how to make money and he wants to go with the name 6-figure John. If you Google a 6-figure John and then filter by channels there's actually no one else name 6-figure John, so this would be a good name for him to use.

Now once your name is in the clear on the YouTube search you want to see if there's people on other social media sites that are using the same name as you or if someone is using the domain for the name that you want to have in case you want to make a website in the future I would highly recommend using a website called KnowEm because you can put in any username and then no one will go through every single website as well as a bunch of different domains and see if the name is taken anywhere. And the chances are if you choose a name right now and you put it into Noah it's probably going to be taken on some sites such as Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter.

But I wouldn't let that stop you from actually going with the name. It's just important to know if it's available everywhere because for example my name Chiko it wasn't taken on Instagram but it was taken on Facebook. And so I knew this going into it and I thought okay maybe on Facebook and other places where the name is taken I can use the names Chiko TV.

Now say that John is very happy with his name 6-figure John and he decides to go with the name but then he finds out is taken on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the website is taken as well. While what he could do is he could also add a few prefixes or suffixes to modify his name. If it's taken. Now I would do this very very selectively because you want to choose a name that's as short as possible that's easy to remember and one that's very very unique.

So for example, if you're going with the name John maybe you can change it to I am John, Call me John, The John, like something that's very short and doesn't take away from the Ashla name. Or if you were a group that makes tutorial videos and Chiko was taken you could be as Chikomedia, ChikoTV, Chikotutorials.

and it doesn't really take away from your brand and it's still fairly easy to remember. As a rule of thumb, I would not add any numbers to my name just because it makes it way more complicated than it should be. And I would also not change the spelling of words too much. You always want to avoid adding unnecessary prefixes and suffixes. But if you have to add a few I would choose the ones that still make the name very easy to remember and ones that sound very nice and are so relevant to your brand.

Make a table & score

Now say you have the opposite problem. You have too many names to choose from. You found a bunch of names that you really like and you don't know which one to go with. Here what I would do is I would make a table where I have all of the names along the different rows and then I would give each name score based on different criteria.

For example, how memorable is the name? Which one is the shortest? Which one's available on as many sites as possible? Which one's unique? And I would score each name on each of these criteria from 1 to 10 and then the name of the highest score or win. Or what I would do is I would just ask my friends and try to get as much feedback as possible. I think that asking your friends is very very underrated because what you can do is you can give them a channel name suggestion and get their opinion on it.

But then the next day what you can do is you can ask them and be like Hey do you remember my channel name? And if they don't remember it, it means that it isn't that memorable of a name. Another reason I think this is very underrated is because they might be able to point out things that you would not have thought of on your own.

For example, I regret, I wish that I asked my family members or friends about the name Chiko because when I told them about my channel after I actually chose the name a lot of them were like Oh you spell it C H I K O. Do you just really like Drake? Is that why you chose the name? Because his record label is called IKO. But that is absolutely not why I chose the name. It just happens to be a coincidence which I would have known about earlier before I chose my name if I had just asked my friends.

So it never hurts to ask as many people as possible. And then once you finally have a name that you're very happy with I would just sit on it for 24 hours and you know go to sleep wake up and reevaluate it to make sure that you're absolutely certain that this is what you want your brain name to be because a name can be very very hard to change.

For example, it took Timothy DeLaGhetto almost a few years of deciding whether or not he wants to use his real name or not. So it's something that you want to put a lot of thought into. And hopefully, these tips do help you choose the perfect name for your channel.
