How to Access Your Computer's Files From Anywhere In The World

How to Access Your Computer's Files From Anywhere In The World

So, imagine this, you are in your workplace working on a deadline and suddenly it came to you, some of the important files are on your home computer. Or let's say, for any other reason you want 24/7 access to all your computer files from any part of the world.

What is the easiest way to do that?

I’ll show you a very simple way to remotely access files on your computer. The only condition is that the host computer should be turned on and connected to the internet all the time. Now, I know there are many ways to do it... But,, the method we are going to see here well, it’s completely free, works on every platform, and there is no bandwidth restriction at all. Now, before we begin, let’s take a look at some of the alternative methods.

But then again, I highly recommend you spare two minutes and read this entire article. You will have a crystal clear idea of what happening in the market.

1. Ok, so the first thing that came to my mind was to put my files on cloud storage like google drive or dropbox but then, it’s not possible to clone my entire hard drive to the cloud.

2. The second thing was to buy a dedicated NAS or router with a remote access feature... The good thing about this is, you don’t have to keep your computer turned on all the time, but this setup is just too expensive.

If your router has a USB port, you can attach an external hard drive to it. Next, I think about hosting a VPN or FTP server on my computer now, personally, I would love to do that but it won’t be an ideal solution for less tech-savvy people. As it would be too much technical. Like forwarding ports and all.

Then finally came the company, which will take care of all the geeky stuff. Like unity, LogMeIn, GoToMyPC, and Pushbullet, etc... but they all paid, and with not just one-time fees but a monthly subscription model.

Overall, this led me to wonder, this is a pretty common problem then how come there is no easy way to do it. And well guess, what! There is a simple way where you don’t have to pay anything and you get all the perks. In fact, you might already be using it, it’s just that, no one is talking about it.

So, here is how it’s done.

1. Open your computer, whose files you would like to access remotely then open the browser and download Teamviewer. Yes, that is popular screen-sharing software. It’s available for windows, mac, and Linux and chances are you already have it on your computer.

2. Once downloaded, install the software and open it. Now, usually, we stop here.

3. But to get the file-sharing feature, you need to go one step further and create a free account.

This way, you don’t have to enter the username password each time you want to log in. Remember, TeamViewer is completely free for personal use you have to pay, only if you are using it for commercial purposes.

4. So enter your email account and password and there we go. Now, you can try to access it from your phone. in that case, my computer was right in front of me but you can use another operating system.

Keep in mind we are not going to use the Lan method.

5. Switch on my mobile data. By the way, if you are on the same wifi network then you don’t need any software for this.

6. Once you are connected to the internet open the team viewer app, sign with your username and password and it’ll give you the list of all devices. Now if you have TeamViewer running tap on the one you want. And there we go.

You have read-only access to the entire hard drive which means you can copy any stuff from your computer but you can delete anything. Now, say, you want to copy a file. So, simply tap on the checkmark next to it go to your local hard drive and paste it.

The copy speed depends on your upload speed on your home internet connection. To see the content, you will have to use the file manager. Overall, now that I have told you, it might look very obvious but trust me, many people go for the paid solution when they easily do it for free it’s just about whether you know about it or not. So, If I have saved you some cash then give this article a share and leave a comment.
